I started taking Plaquenil 2/2009 by 8/2009 I was noticing changes in my vision. Thing were going dim but the eye doctor kept telling me there was no toxicity. By 2/2010 things were so dim I could not see to shop in stores. I quit taking Plaquenil but the DR still said no toxicity. My eyes continued to get worst. Jan 05, 2020 Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil and chloroquine cause ocular toxicity to various parts of the eye such as the cornea, ciliary body, and retina. Chloroquine can also induce cataract formation; however, no reports of hydroxychloroquine and cataract have been reported 1. Apr 20, 2011 Although the incidence of macular toxicity is infrequent with Plaquenil use at a dosage of 200mg or 400mg q.d. its visual impact can be devastating. 2,3. The associated classic retinal toxicity is described as a bull’s eye maculopathy ring of depigmented retinal pigment epithelium that spares the foveal area.

It is imperative that patients and physicians are aware of and watch for this drug’s ocular side effects. Retinal toxicity from hydroxychloroquine is rare, but even if the medication is discontinued, vision loss may be irreversible and may continue to progress.

Feb 19, 2020 The adult dose of Plaquenil to treat an acute attack of malaria is an initial dose of 800 mg followed by 400 mg in six to eight hours and 400 mg for two more days. To treat lupus erythematosus, the average adult dose is 400 mg once or twice daily. METHODS A prospective and continuing evaluation was made of the potential retinal toxicity of hydroxychloroquine in a cohort of 360 Greek patients followed for RA and SLE, 58 of whom have received long term treatment six years. Toxic maculopathy is a form of retinal toxicity that is associated with antimalarial agents such as plaquenil and chloroquine. Both medications are commonly used to treat patients with systemic autoimmune diseases that include the following

DOXYCYCLINE/PLAQUENIL - SO CONFUSED! - Road Back Foundation So you'd be hitting two or three things at once with a doxy/plaquenil combination. Plaquenil is also pretty well tolerated by most people. Maybe the worst symptom I had until I had to stop due to visual disturbances – rare! was some gastrointestinal discomfort, but it was tolerable, all in all, and I don't think everyone is affected that way.
