Plaquenil was actually first classified as an antimalarial drug, but it is also used to treat certain rheumatic and autoimmune conditions which are unrelated to malaria. Generally, Plaquenil is a treatment option as monotherapy used alone for mild rheumatoid arthritis or as combination therapy with other DMARDs for moderate to severe disease. Some people have a type of scleroderma called CREST syndrome or limited scleroderma. Unlike other types, which only affect the arms, legs, and face, this kind can involve your digestive tract. Mar 11, 2017 Plaquenil is not, however, one of the "powerhouse" meds that are needed when disease progression occurs. I am now on methotrexate as well as low dose prednisone & Plaquenil. If your doctor feels that your symptoms are progressing rapidly & recommends more aggressive treatment I would advise you to consider it carefully.

I get my eyes checked once a year ( some go every 6 months). It's a excellent drug and I haven't had any side effects to it.

Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is a drug that is classified as an anti-malarial drug. Plaquenil is prescribed for the treatment or prevention of malaria. It is also prescribed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and the side effects of lupus such as hair loss, joint pain, and more. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. The alternative to Plaquenil is a slightly different anti malarial called Quinacrine. Plaquenil replaced Quinacrine formerly called Atabrine for anti malarial prophylaxis so now the Quinacrine has to be made up into pills or gel capsules by a compounding pharmacy. If you google you will find details of compounding pharmacies.
